Farmhouse Cake Stand

Mother was in her own world as she baked her cake. It was a Sunday tradition in the family. A choreographed freedom of action, she measured accurately and whisked with intent. We tried to help but only got in the way and caused a mess, mischievously dipping our fingers into the cake-mix, only to get scolded. It was all part of the fun.

Mother would put an unimpressive, liquid-mix into the oven and after what would feel like a century, out comes her creation. First, comes the aroma of the freshly baked sponge, soft in its very smell. Then she carries the cake in her honeybee oven mitts, as if holding a prized trophy and gently sets it on her showcase cake stand.

On this pedestal, the golden surface of the cake reflected the sun’s glimmer that filtered in through the opaque windows – the perfect stage to present her bakes, charming and charismatic.
